Why I love photographing people doing their thing
I didn’t really plan to start photographing people at work.
It happened quite naturally after I was asked to capture someone while they were doing their thing, with a few headshots thrown in while we were there.
And I loved it.
Not in a dramatic “this is my calling” kind of way. More in a “oh, this feels like something I want to do more of” kind of way.
There was something really nice about photographing someone doing their thing, rather than just standing still and smiling at the camera.

It's not just about nice photos
Of course, I want the photos to look lovely.
But what I really enjoy is capturing the bit behind the finished work.
The setting up. The little details. The concentration face. The way someone naturally moves when they’re working. The moments they probably wouldn’t think to photograph themselves.
Because that’s the stuff that tells a much better story.
Especially if you’re a small business owner, founder, maker, service provider, creative, or someone who spends a lot of time making things look easy from the outside.
People want to see the person behind the business

I think we can all be guilty of only showing the finished thing.
The final gallery. The finished room. The polished service. The neat little Instagram square. The lovely end result.
But the process is often the most interesting bit.
It helps people understand the care that goes into what you do. It gives them a feel for you. And it makes your business feel a lot more human.
That’s what I love about these shoots.
They’re not about forcing you into awkward poses or making you feel like you suddenly need to become a “personal brand”.
They’re just about capturing you, your work, and the little moments that make it yours.
I’m still building this little part of Calmé

I’m still quite new to this side of photography, but I think that’s part of why I’m enjoying it so much.
Every shoot feels different.
Different people. Different spaces. Different ways of working. Different little stories to notice.
And I like that.
I like turning up, having a chat, seeing how someone works, and capturing it in a way that feels natural rather than staged.
Maybe you need this too

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I had some nice photos of me actually doing my work,” then this is probably the kind of shoot for you.
Not just a headshot. Not just a few nice pictures for your website. But a small collection of images that show what it feels like to work with you, buy from you, or be in your world.
The kind of images you can use on your website, Instagram, LinkedIn, blog posts, emails, and anywhere else you need to show up a little more easily.
Because when people can see you, your process and the care behind what you do, it makes it much easier for them to connect with you.
Let's Chat
If this sounds like something you’d love for your own business, I’d be very happy to chat through ideas.
Whether you’re in a studio, at your desk, in your shop, setting up an event, working with a client, or just doing the thing you do every day, there’s probably more to capture than you realise.
